to those who went to the PARTNERSHIP WALK...
To the Friends and Fans of SOUTH BORDER who went to PARTNERSHIP WALK:
Fresh from last night's gig at BB KINGS, South Border showed up for their sound check at the park by the LA Colliseum for PARTNERSHIP WALK by 8 AM.
Unfortunately, the band had to leave and catch on some sleep upon realizing that there was no band set up for the event.
Apparently, there was a miscommunication between the organizers and the provider of sound system. As much as SB wants to perform to a much diverse crowd and specially that the event is for a good cause, it would not be possible due to the absence of the technical requirements.
Our apologies to those who expected to see South Border on this day.
See you on Nov. 4 at the Benefit Concert for St. Jude Research Hospital.

ROCK THE HOUSE: South Border delivers another unforgettable performance during the recording session.
UNIVERSAL CITY—South Border returned to BB King's Blues Club on Oct. 11 to record their live album. In front of a "by invitation only" only crowd, the band performed as if they were in front of thousands.
Re-record
"Kanta tayo ng Tagalog," Vince Alaras, one of the band's vocalists, jokingly said onstage before performing their first song. Of course, that would be impossible because the album will be sold to mainstream America, not just to the Filipino community.
Butch Victoriano, the band's lead guitarist, said the band's recording on their last performance in BB King on Sept. 30 didn't pass the band's standards. "Since there were other bands who performed, it became harder to fix it, and the sound isn't clean enough, there were some problems with the sound system," he said.
South Border's ensemble also includes Jay Durias, the band's musical director, keyboardist and vocalist; Duncan Ramos, vocalist; Ric Junasa, saxophonist and flutist; Paul Benitez, percussionist; and Tata Balane, bass guitarist.
The band definitely delivered the goods as it performed its unforgettable originals (like "Sweet" and "Rainbow") to perfection. South Border also played their soothing rendition of the Eraserheads' classic "With a Smile."
The band also performed their Earth, Wind and Fire (like "September") and Michael Jackson medley. When the band finished with their performance, Dimarcko Chandler, owner and general manager of the magnificent venue, requested for an extension for the Filipino crowd. This is the same man who baptized South Border as "the best band that has ever played in BB King's."
Suddenly, Jay had the idea of performing their Pilipino monster hit "Kahit Kailan." Of course, Chandler and the audience enjoyed the bonus song.
Learning experience
Before the show, Jay revealed to this writer that the band is still fresh from visiting Seattle this previous weekend. "Unlike in Los Angeles, most of the crowd were composed of Filipinos who were born here that's why they've never seen South Border live but they know our songs," he said.
Jay added that the revelation of the composition of the audience made him nervous. "Good thing when we started singing our original songs, they joined us and that definitely was a great feeling," he said.
The keyboardist also said that he is slowly adapting to the musical life in America. "Unlike in Manila, where we have gigs almost everyday, here, we have fewer performances, but that makes it more special because that makes each one a memorable learning experience."
Jay also praised Chandler. "I'm very thankful for his help, he believes in the band's potential and he has become very supportive." It is evident that help that band is receiving from Chandler, a well-known personality in the Los Angeles music circuit, is a testament to the immense potential the band exudes.
South Border is definitely on the right track to mainstream success.

blog related post: Give Thanks to the Healthy Children in our Lives...
In yet again another display of their ceaseless gratitude to fans and for all their blessings, multi-awarded Filipino band South Border will hold a special benefit show on November 4, 2006 at the La Trova House in West Los Angeles . Dubbed "Give Thanks to the Healthy Children in our Lives...Give To Those Who Are Not", the special event aims to gather diverse communities and together help in the fight against catastrophic childhood diseases. St. Jude Research Hospital is the main beneficiary.
"The show is also South Border's way of thanking their fans, friends and supporters, both old and new. The show will not only provide a platform where fun and music can be fused together but for South Border to share some of their blessings especially for the welfare of children," says Lucy Slattery, the band’s manager.
Presented by South Border and the South Border Street Team Los Angeles, the benefit show is also being sponsored by HHIPP Magazine, Katz Entertainment, Unicare Family Medical Group and Seafood City . While show tickets are sold at $25 each, a tax deductible $10 donation will go to the St. Jude Research Hospital. The rest will help cover expenses for the event.
The band, known for unforgettable hits "Rainbow" (recognized as the most downloaded song in Asia), "Kahit Kailan", "Sweet" (the very first Filipino song laced with flavorful RnB to be featured in 93.5 KDAY radio station), "Wherever You Are", recently had a sold out concert at The Grove in Anaheim after launching its international music career this Spring.
South Border, called by notable music insiders as the "next Asian invasion", is composed of Jay Oliver Durias (musical director, keyboards), Duncan Ramos (vocals), Vince Alaras (vocals), Paul Benitez (drums), Ric Junasa (saxophone), Butch Victoriano (lead guitar) and Tata Balane (bass). The band is being supported by their friends from The Los Angeles Musicians United, an organization comprised of independent musicians including Patrick "Patman" Anderson, Dr. Jekill, Mulatto and Jeanine Strong, an up and coming music and fashion icon who does urban melodic soul and more.

JAMPACKED: All three floors of BB King’s Blues Club in Universal City was filled for the performance of South Border.
UNIVERSAL CITY—On the exciting night of Sept. 30, a clueless middle-aged American asked the bartender at BB King’s Blues Club in Universal City what South Border was. In the middle of preparing his drink, he replied: “they’re the biggest band in the Philippines.” The band definitely didn’t disappoint the jam-packed three-floor venue.
Democracy
Before the show started Jay revealed to this writer that people mistake him for being the bandleader because he was the musical director of the group. “When it comes to selecting our songs and the musical approach, every member has a say, South Border is pretty much a democracy,” he chuckled. He goes on to credit the band’s two young (but immensely) talented vocalists, Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras. “I commend them because they have been very good in adapting to the band, whatever we advise them they follow.”
He also apologized to fans who were disappointed in their sold-out concert with MYMP in the Grove of Anaheim on Sept. 15 for not performing two of their biggest hits, “Rainbow” and “Kahit Kailan.” He explained: “We were supposed to perform (those songs) but the management of the venue stopped us and we had ten minutes overtime already.”
On a more personal note, Jay shared his passion for music was infused to him by his dad, Bong who is also an exceptional musician. He is currently staying in Cerritos with his very hospitable Uncle Joseph. “He is also in the music business, I guess it’s all in the family,” he said with amusement.
He also revealed that the reason for South Border’s westernized musical style is because of simply listening to the radio while he was growing up. “All the English songs had affected my music,” he said.
With regard to penetrating to mainstream, Jay’s sentiments were both realistic and hopeful. “We’ve been trying to penetrate the world stage for fifteen years now.” Jay added that an obvious difference is that you wouldn’t be hearing any Pilipino songs in a mainstream gig such as this.
“We’re slowly getting to that goal because in this performance tonight, we didn’t apply, it was the BB King’s management that called us,” he said with pride.
“Satisfying the Filipino crowd and an American crowd is very different,” he adds “Filipinos are very laid back so love songs and ballads are a must but with a mainstream crowd, you need to keep the energy up all the time.” Definitely, that statement defined their electrifying performance that night.
Electrify
Dimarcko Chandler, owner and general manager of the magnificent venue, the same man who baptized South Border as “the best band that has ever played in BB King’s,” introduced the band with flair. In describing the band’s potential, he even said to the crowd that “you ain’t seen nothin’yet.” He revealed that tonight isn’t any ordinary performance because South Border is also recording a live album. Not just that, he also revealed that the band’s performance can be seen via web telecast at www.bbking.com, the club’s official site.
South Border energized everybody and made the crowd stand up and dance. The powerful vocal duo of South Border, Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras, started the night with the band’s brisk and sensuous “Sweet.”
South Border’s ensemble also includes Ric Junasa, saxophonist and flutist; Paul Benitez, percussionist; Tata Balane, bass guitarist; and guitarist Butch Victoriano.
They also performed Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September” and Queen’s timeless rock anthem, “We will Rock You.”
They moved on and kept everybody pumped up with the Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started.” Many went in front (Americans and Filipinos alike) of the stage and danced to the beat. Duncan even showed his dance moves in the middle of the performance.
But the highlight of the performance was definitely their power balled “Love of My Life.” Ric was at his element as he showed his eloquent approach to playing his sax. Moreover, Butch, the band’s guitarist showed his plucking abilities. Of course, Jay’s smooth vocal, paired with that of Duncan and Vince was simply captivating. This song definitely highlighted every aspect of what makes South Border special: a unique, elegant sound unmatched by anyone in the industry.
Blown away
“I’m blown away and I know everybody is too,” Dimarcko said as he returned to the stage after the performance. Even Vanessa Brown, a well-known music producer for Platinum Touch commented: “These boys are incredible, I’m speechless.”
The group was finished already with their set but as a result of the constant chanting of the crowd for “more,” in a fitting ending, the group performed its (arguably) best written song ever, “Rainbow.”
Surprisingly, even the people from the crowd who were obviously born and grew up in America seem to have been captivated by South Border everyone was dancing to the groove. It was world-class entertainment at its best.
Watching South Border, an evidently premier Filipino band, definitely made one proud of his roots. This is definitely just the start of what could be the greatest thing that can happen in Filipino music.
