Jay Durias goes solo

source: The Manila Times

"There is no truth to the talks that I am leaving South Border. This CD is something personal, something that I have worked long and hard for."

SOUTH BORDER main man Jay Durias is finally giving the music world a touch uniquely his own via a solo album dubbed Songs I Grew Up With, produced under new label Open Mic Records and distributed by Star Records. And no, this project should not be given any color. The solo project has the full lessings of his bandmates and is in no way an indication that he’s leaving the band.

I am not going solo. There is no truth that I am leaving South Border with the relase of this album. It’s something personal, something I have worked long and hard for, “ intones Durias.

This CD is a collection of carefully chosen ditties which have made quite an impact in Durias’s young life. Songs I Grew Up With contains 10 tracks.

Before we dismiss the album as just another bunch of chopped covers, one must realize that these songs represent memories. Hence, unlike other albums that either try to match the original artists’ high notes or try to focus on the songs’ commercial appeal, the songs in this album are stamped with candor, warmth and individuality. Because Durias sings them honestly and from the heart, the songs become different. Every song has new details and Durias’s genuine artistry reflects on each song

Songs I Grew Up With boasts of a lot of attitude, beautifully re-arranged tunes and solid, powerful vocal varieties. The album can be considered a journey of sorts. From the days when Durias was still searching for his place in Davao up to the time when South Border started to hit gold with one hit song after another. The popular keyboardist, composer, arranger and musical director is instrumental in the timeless hits of the group including “Rainbow,” “Love of My Life” and “Kahit Kailan,” and “Habang Atin Ang Gabi.”

Let it be emphasized, however, that Songs I Grew Up With is not just a showcase of Durias’s arranging skills—although for sure industry experts will agree that the album can and has now set the rules, if not raise the bar, in terms of musical arrangements. Vocals-wise, the album can be considered a treasure trove of sorts.

The new CD, with all its artful arrangement, smooth vocal power and meticulous choice of significant tracks, has all the ingredients of hard work, talent, ingenuity and yes, commercial success.

*SEPT. 29 SHOW W/ HOWARD HEWITT RECAP

SOUTH BORDER'S show last Saturday September 29 at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California with the legendary Howard Hewitt was a success. The attendance could have been better, but the reception of the crowd was unbelievable. 90% of the 2,000 capacity venue were NON Filipinos. We're talking about people who have never seen or heard of SOUTH BORDER. They jammed and grooved to songs like Love of My life and the new single "Your Space." SOUTH BORDER got great responses after each song. The crowd did not want the band to stop singing and demanded for more. THAT IS NOT A PUBLICITY STUNT EITHER, BUT THE TRUTH. It is such a great blessing to know that SOUTH BORDER'S stock in the mainstream community is rising. Ric, Jay, Tata, Butch & Paul held their own and just took the crowd's breath away. Special shout outs to our label mate Zuri, Slapbak, Hollywood All Starts and Howard Hewitt for all giving such great performances. Special thanks to Kevin Nash from KJLH for pumping up SOUTH BORDER.

*SPECIAL THANKS FROM BUTCH AND PAUL

We would just like to extend our warmest thanks for everyone who offered their condolences and prayers after the death of our fathers. Being away from home made it very tough, but we found comfort and strength thru the Lord and all of you. The months of July and August were very tough for us and the whole band, but our faith in God and the love of our fans got us thru and for that we thank you. We want you all to know that we both have peace of minds knowing our dads are in a better place now watching over us. Our deepest gratitude to all of you. May God bless each and everyone of you.

Sincerely,
Paul Benitez
